October 9^th thru15^th 2011 will mark an effort of local fire departments across the country to coordinate the National Fire Prevention Week. Established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of Oct.8^th 1871, in which 250 people tragically died, National Fire Prevention Week is the culmination fire education and prevention efforts. This year’s theme is, It’s Fire Prevention Week! Protect Your Family From Fire!

The Parma Fire department would like to offer some safety tips to reduce the risk of fires starting in the home and workplace.

Some of the leading causes of fires are cooking, electrical, smoking, candles, and heating stoves or fireplaces.
Practicing fire safety should be done in the workplace and at home.
Having a working smoke detectors in the home markly increases the survival rate of fire victim's. It only takes minutes to fill a house with smoke, and most fires occur in winter months.
Batteries should be replaced whenever you change your clocks and tested once a month.
Exit Drills In The Home (E.D.I.T.H.) should also be practiced once a month and from every room of the house.
Children should be taught to know two ways out of their home and families should establish a safe meeting place outside the home in the event of a fire. Residents can get additional information regarding fire prevention and education at www.nfpa.org or www.firesafety.gov
